Black Moon Ancestral Magic: A Rare New Moon Portal

A crescent Black Moon shining in the night sky above a hand holding a glowing jar of lights, symbolizing ancestral magic, new moon rituals, and rare cosmic energy for spiritual renewal.

On Saturday, August 23rd, we step into something rare: a Black Moon.

This occurs when a single season carries four new moons instead of the usual three, a rhythm that only happens every few years. It’s a reset so uncommon that it feels like time itself is stretching open a window just for us. Spiritually, the Black Moon is not just another phase—it’s a cosmic pause, a thinning of the veil where the unseen comes closer, where you’re invited to meet the parts of yourself you often keep tucked away. And within that thinning, our ancestors rise closer too. This is a moment they’ve written into the stars long before us—codes of wisdom and healing they placed in the sky as guideposts. With every Black Moon, those ancestral codes awaken, stirring upgrades in our DNA, nudging us into new levels of awareness, and reminding us that renewal is not just personal, it is also collective. It’s an energetic reset that pulls you into shadow work, clarity, and deep renewal—not in theory, but in the very real sense of giving yourself permission to step out of old cycles and into something that finally feels like truth.

🌑 A Ritual to Ground Into the Black Moon

For this Black Moon, you’re invited to create a small altar—something simple, intentional, and deeply yours. Gather these three elements:

  • A plant (preferred) or fresh flowers — something living and rooted, or blooming with beauty

  • A crystal or stone — black tourmaline, clear quartz, or amethyst are powerful allies, but if you don’t have these, choose any crystal you love—or even a rock from outside that you infuse with intention

  • A small glass of water — to invite clarity, flow, and reflection

Place them together in a space that feels safe and undisturbed—your nightstand, a windowsill, or the corner of a desk. This becomes your Black Moon altar.

Sit with it for a few moments. Light a candle if you wish. Speak your intentions out loud—just one or two that feel alive for you right now. As you speak, see your words move into the altar you’ve built—rooting into the plant, anchoring in the stone, reflecting in the water.

For three days, return to your altar. Whisper your intentions again. Touch the crystal. Refresh the water. Let this practice root your beginning into the physical world, carried forward each time you return.

When the three days are complete, you may choose to keep your altar or lovingly dismantle it:

  • If you used flowers, return them to the earth. Lay them outside to wilt naturally back into the soil, or bury them if you feel called.

  • If you used a plant, return it to its original place or choose a new spot in your home that will remind you of this energy each time you see it.

  • Drink the water as a way of taking your intentions into your body.

  • Keep the crystal with you—on your altar, beside your bed, or even in your pocket—as a reminder of what you’ve begun.

🌑 Final Reflection

The Black Moon won’t come again for years, and that’s what makes this one sacred. It’s a reminder that rare moments are invitations to become rare within ourselves—to choose the path that feels truest, even if it’s new, even if it asks more of us.

As you sit with your altar, as you speak your intentions, as you take your first steps into this new lunar cycle—remember that you’re not moving alone. You’re moving with the rhythm of the earth, with the whispers of your ancestors, with the unseen guidance that rises closer under this moon.

Here’s to a reset that feels real. To beginnings that actually root. To a season that carries you closer to the self you’ve always known was waiting.

And if you feel called to continue this work in community, I invite you to join me for an upcoming Floating Sound Bath Ceremony at L’eau Hill House on September 5th. While the Black Moon opens the door, ceremony helps us walk through it—holding space together for renewal, grounding, and remembrance. You can join the ceremony and reserve your float through this link.
